C.O.B.R.A.

COBRA is an acronym for the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986. The act allows certain people to temporarily retain their group health insurance from an employer when they are no longer employed, have reduced hours or other qualifying circumstances. This extends to retirees, divorced spouses and children. In most cases the employer will no longer contribute to the premium, but the full premium for a group plan is usually much less expensive than an individual policy.

Electric Shock Therapy (ECT)

Electroconvulsive Therapy is controversial to say the least. For patients and doctors alike, some are vehemently opposed to ECT under any circumstances and some say ECT is justified in severe cases of depression, especially when there is a possibility of suicide before other therapies have the opportunity to work. As always, we offer no opinion, only information. Decide for yourself in conjunction with your health care provider.

Prescription Assistance

As we're all aware, prescriptions can be very expensive.  For those without insurance, the costs can be impossible to bear. We hope the links below may offer some help.

In New York State the Attorney General's Office compiles and updates drug prices from selected pharmacies throughout the state. This makes on-line price comparisons possible and sometimes the savings can be quite dramatic as this quote from their website demonstrates: "In our most recent statewide survey, we found that prices of frequently prescribed medications can vary widely among pharmacies a few miles apart. For example, Neurontin (dosage: 5mg; quantity: 30 tabs), commonly prescribed to control seizures was $106.95 at one pharmacy and $223.00 at another about 6 miles apart, a difference of about $117."  To compare prices click here

Partnership for Prescription Assistance From their site: "The Partnership for Prescription Assistance brings together America’s pharmaceutical companies, doctors, other health care providers, patient advocacy organizations and community groups to help qualifying patients who lack prescription coverage get the medicines they need through the public or private program that’s right for them. Many will get them free or nearly free. Its mission is to increase awareness of patient assistance programs and boost enrollment of those who are eligible. Through this site, the Partnership for Prescription Assistance offers a single point of access to more than 275 public and private patient assistance programs, including more than 150 programs offered by pharmaceutical companies. To access the Partnership for Prescription Assistance by phone, you can call toll-free, 1-888-4PPA-NOW (1-888-477-2669)."

Self Help

Self help can be useful, but be wary of advice to change or stop medication, counseling or psychotherapy. Always consult your health care provider before changing anything. Remember that mental illness is not your fault and is an illness, like any other. Just as a malfunction of the pancreas causes diabetes, a malfunction of the brain causes mental illness. Mental illness has nothing to do with a person's character and doesn't mean someone is weak. In fact, those with mental illness are some of the strongest people. Just as a diabetic isn't weak and can't "snap out of it", neither can a person with mental illness.
